BRAIDWOOD

Location: Approximately 2 miles South of Carluke and 4.5 miles North of Lanark.
Population: Approximately 600
Education: 1 Primary School which is a feeder for Carluke High School.
Community Facilities: There is a community space within the Primary School.
The old village hall is now run by Braidwood Playgroup.

Local Information: The medieval Barony of Braidwood included the nearby Tower of Halibar.
Braidwood House, the former seat of Lord Clydesmuir, has now fallen into disrepair. There are
several signposted woodland walks and Braidwood Pond is a popular spot for local people to visit.

 

CARLUKE

Location: Lies on the A73 Approximately 5.5 miles NW of Lanark and 5 miles SE of Wishaw.
Population: Approximately 13,500 people.
Education: 1 High School, 5 Primary Schools and 1 school for children with additional support needs.
Community Facilities: Carluke Leisure Centre is situated next to the High School and Carluke Library
is incorporated in the Lifestyles Centre which is next to St. Athanasius Primary School.

Local Information: The town was chartered as a Royal Burgh in 1662. It expanded during the
industrial age with work involving corn milling, cotton weaving, coal mining and the manufacture of
bricks, glass, confectionary and jam. Situated in the country but not too far from major motorways,
Carluke benefits from good links to other towns and cities but beautiful countryside round about.
Carluke railway station has a large carpark and train services running to both Glasgow and Edinburgh
near the town centre.

CROSSFORD

Location: Crossford lies on the A72 alongside the River Clyde. 4.5 miles NW of Lanark and 9 miles SE
of Hamilton.
Population: approximately 750 people.
Education: 1 Primary School which is a feeder primary for Lanark Grammar School.
Community Facilities: Following a recent community asset transfer, a residents group has taken on
the lease of Crossford Village Hall and will manage this so that a variety of groups can meet there.
Local Information: Crossford is situated in the beautiful Clyde Valley which has a long history of fruit
growing. The 40 mile Clyde Walkway footpath passes through the village and there are a variety of
garden centres with cafes which are popular with visitors nearby.

 

KILNCADZOW

Location: Kilncadzow lies 2 miles SE of Carluke and 3 miles N of Lanark on the A721.
Population: approximately 120 people
Education: Most children attend schools in Carluke.
Community Facilities: The village has a play park and the old village school is now a community hall.
Local Information: The Roman road which passed through Clydesdale to the Western extremity of
the Antonine Wall can be found in the village. The village has several farms nearby and an
abandoned stone quarry is located on common land just North of A721.

 

LAW

Location: Approximately 5.5. miles SE of Wishaw and 2 miles NW of Carluke.
Population: Approximately 3,000 people.
Education: 1 Primary School which is a feeder for Carluke High School.
Community Facilities: Following a recent community asset transfer, the village hall is now managed
by Law Boxing Club which hires out some rooms to other groups when available.
Local Community Group: Law Community Trust. See website and Facebook for more information
about other groups, etc.
Local Information: Law is situated in a rural area and was a former mining village. Law Hospital on
the outskirts of the village closed in 2001 when a new hospital was built in Wishaw to replace it.
Like many local towns and villages in this area, it is expanding as new housing is being developed.

 

YIELDSHIELDS

Location: approximately 2 miles E of Carluke.
Population: 150 people.
Education: The old primary school was built in 1881 and following its closure c.1965 most children
attend schools in Carluke.
Community Facilities: There is a playpark in the centre of the village for children and families. Local
residents can also use other leisure and community facilities in Carluke.
Local Information: Yieldshields is situated in a rural area and has a history of agricultural farming.
More recently, some new housing has been built and a Windfarm was installed nearby.
